The Identifier Scrubber removes or hashes HIPAA Safe Harbor identifiers — names, geographic subdivisions, dates, contact info, identifiers and more.

First gate on PHI

Nothing reaches date shifting until all 18 identifier classes are handled — partial scrubbing is not allowed.

Responsibilities

Deterministic hashing with environment-specific pepper for joinability inside research zone only.
Drops rows for patients who withdrew research consent.
First stage in the de-id pipeline before date shifting.
